Microsoft 365 E5 compliance and security advantages over Microsoft 365 E3 can be understood by evaluating two E3 add-on suites: Microsoft 365 E5 Compliance and Microsoft 365 E5 Security.

E5 Compliance

The Microsoft 365 E5 Compliance suite offers the following:

Microsoft 365 E5 Information Protection & Governance provides additional information about, and controls over, an organization’s sensitive data stored on Microsoft-hosted services. Major capabilities include data loss prevention (DLP), including endpoint DLP for Windows 10 devices, document classification and retention, records management, and “customer key” control of encryption keys for stored data in services. The Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps gateway service, which helps discover and control access to  Microsoft and third-party cloud services, is included.

Microsoft 365 E5 eDiscovery & Audit provides features to capture, export, and analyze data for investigations. Capabilities include Advanced eDiscovery, which provides analysis (such as near-duplicate detection) to speed review of captured data, custodian management to help administrators identify and notify owns of information subject to eDiscovery, and longer-term retention of Microsoft 365 service audit logs to enable later investigation.
