Dynamics AX contains a large library of components for managing diverse business processes. One way that Microsoft classifies the various components is shown here.

Dynamics AX includes components for specific target industries, such as material requirements planning and production scheduling for manufacturing, and advanced warehouse management functions for distribution firms. It also includes features for service firms (such as engineering or advertising) and public sector organizations (such as government agencies and nonprofits). (Dynamics AX is targeted at retail, but its existing retail solution does not currently work on Dynamics AX 2012; an update is expected in Jan. 2012.)

Industry support is built on a set of components for horizontal business processes that are required by many different types of firms, including financials, supply chain management (SCM) functions such as management of sales orders, inventory, and project management and accounting. Supplier relationship management (SRM) functions such as purchase orders and vendor approvals, customer relationship management (CRM) functions such as sales and marketing, and human resources (HR) functions such as recruiting and payroll are also covered.
