Dynamics AX 2012 contains a large library of components for managing diverse business processes. Shown here is one way Microsoft classifies the component library, which has grown substantially in this version. Systems integrators prepare a Dynamics AX installation by choosing and configuring components from the library for the customer. Integrators also often supplement Microsoft’s built-in components with third-party components from software vendors (for example, country-specific payroll systems) and modify or add to the component set themselves. A larger built-in component library means less such customization is required, which simplifies both initial implementation and subsequent maintenance.

Dynamics AX includes components for specific target industries (top), such as material requirements planning and production scheduling for manufacturing and advanced warehouse management functions for distribution firms. It also includes features for services firms (such as engineering or advertising) and public sector organizations (such as government agencies and nonprofits). (Dynamics AX also is targeted at retail, but its existing retail components do not currently work on Dynamics AX 2012; an update is expected in Jan. 2012.)
