Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V includes new components that enable the replication of data from one virtual machine (VM) to another VM across the Internet. Key components include the following:

The Replication Engine is composed of two components:

  • The Replication Manager, which monitors the internal state of the hypervisor and the primary VM (the VM being replicated) for VM life-cycle changes, such as a Live Migration, as well as storing per machine configuration and runtime state information. It handles the initial replication, delta replication, and failover tasks (including failover testing).
  • The Replication Tracker, which records change and status information in a log file that is sent from the primary server to the replica server every five minutes (non-configurable). When a log is in transit, another log is created to begin recording ongoing changes.
