Communications Server 2007 and 2007 R2 left Mainstream support Jan. 8, 2013. Shown here are important upcoming support dates for recent versions of Live Communications Server, Communications Server, and Lync Server. The Communicator and Lync clients follow the life cycles of the corresponding server versions, so Communicator 2007 and 2007 R2 left Mainstream support on the same date as Communications Server 2007 and 2007 R2.
The Lync technology has undergone several name and packaging changes. The server software was introduced as Live Communications Server 2003 and used the free Messenger software as its client. The commercial (Office) Communicator client appeared with Live Communications Server 2005. The server was renamed (Office) Communications Server 2007 with the release of the 2007 versions. The Lync name was introduced for both client and server with the 2010 versions.
