After Windows XP leaves the Mainstream support phase on Apr. 14, 2009, Microsoft will publish fewer patches for the desktop OS. While Microsoft will continue to publish security-related patches for Windows XP through Apr. 2014, the patches will only apply to systems running the latest service pack (SP3).

New patches for nonsecurity bugs in Windows XP (regardless of SP level) no longer made generally available

Security-related patches for SP2 and SP3 continue to be released as needed

Customers who want to have access to any new nonsecurity patches Microsoft produces must have an Extended Hotfix agreement.
July 13, 2010 Windows XP SP2 retired

Microsoft stops releasing security patches for Windows XP SP2

Customers must deploy Windows XP SP3 to continue receiving security patches.
April 8, 2014 Windows XP leaves Extended support
