Not all Microsoft 365 security and management services are available with all Microsoft 365 suites. This chart shows which Microsoft 365 suites for enterprise businesses include Microsoft Defender for Endpoint and what tier of service is included.

  • Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Plan 1 is only included in Microsoft 365 E3, but it is also available stand-alone. It is not included in Windows 10 Enterprise E3.
  • Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Plan 2 (the rebranded Microsoft Defender for Endpoint offering) is included in Windows 10 Enterprise E5 and suites that include it.

Customers should be careful if they do not plan to license all users in the organization for the full Microsoft 365 E5 suite. Mixing features across a tenancy of Microsoft 365 services can lead to license shortfalls and a significant unexpected expense when an audit occurs. Microsoft has not clarified whether Microsoft Defender for Endpoint performs proper license compliance checking depending on which tier of service a user is licensed for.
