Charts & IllustrationsNotification with Mobile Information Server Carrier Edition
Mobile Information Server Carrier Edition is a server application that enables wireless carriers to offer more reliable, secure notification to corporate customers running Mobile Information Server Enterprise Edition than those customers can get with the Enterprise Edition by itself. As shown in the diagram, carriers deploy Mobile Information Server Carrier Edition on a gateway machine that connects Mobile Information Server Enterprise Edition servers at corporate data centers to the carrier’s Short Message Service Center (SMSC). The Enterprise Edition sends notifications via this gateway, instead of to the more typical Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) e-mail notification gateway.
A gateway running the Carrier Edition provides two features that conventional e-mail notification gateways do not:
Reliable delivery. Mobile Information Server Carrier Edition will notify the sending Enterprise Edition server when a pushed message has reached the mobile device, using status information supplied by the SMSC. SMTP push gateways don’t provide this information; all the sending server can determine is whether a pushed message reached the gateway.
