Several products derive from SharePoint Server, but not all adhere to its support dates. Shown below are release and retirement dates for SharePoint Server (which has also been called SharePoint Portal Server).
Forms Server 2007, a discontinued product for SharePoint-based forms distribution and processing, uses the support dates for SharePoint Server 2007.
Search Server 2008, a dedicated enterprise search product based on SharePoint technology, was released Mar. 3, 2008, and will leave Mainstream support July 9, 2013, and Extended support on July 10, 2018.
Windows SharePoint Services (WSS), a free Web application and collaboration platform based on SharePoint Server, diverges from SharePoint Server’s dates in some versions. In particular, WSS 2.0 shipped June 3, 2003, and left Mainstream support July 8, 2008; Extended support ends July 9, 2013. WSS 3.0, in contrast, uses the dates for SharePoint Server 2007.
The current service pack level for Forms Server 2007, Search Server 2008, SharePoint Server 2007, and WSS 3.0 is SP2. SP2 updates for these products were released in Apr. 2009 as part of a package called the 2007 Microsoft Office Servers SP2, which also updated Project Server 2007 and Groove Server 2007. The package was updated in July 2009 to fix a bug that caused some installations to expire as if they were time-limited trials. SP2 will be required for upgrades to SharePoint 2010 products.
