Windows 2008 was generally available in May 2008. This first release is named SP1 to signify a synchronization of the Windows Server code with the code changes in Windows Vista SP1. This means the first service pack with fixes to the released Windows Server 2008 SP1 code will likely be named SP2.

Windows Server 2003 was released in Mar. 2007. The current version is Windows Server 2003 R2 with SP2; a third service pack is possible in late 2009 or early 2010, in conjunction with Windows Vista SP2 or with the release of Windows Server 2008 R2.
