Major updates in 2006 and 2007 introduced new compatibility considerations for the Project line. Project Server 2007 is not compatible with Project Server 2003, the previous version, although it supports data migration from that version. Consequently, Project Server 2007 works only with the Project Professional 2007 client. Conversely, Project Server 2003 is not compatible with the Project Professional 2007 client; it works only with Project Professional 2003. Project Server 2007 is also not compatible with the Portfolio Server 2006 analytics product, but is compatible with the Portfolio Server 2007 release.
A service pack for both client and server was released in Dec. 2007, in conjunction with Office 2007 SP1, and Project Server 2007 SP1 is the only version of Project Server that will run on Windows Server 2008. A set of July 2008 updates fixed problems in both the Project client and Project Server, but also changed the behavior of some features, so the updates will require more testing than a typical hotfix.
