Charts & IllustrationsRDS Components with Data Deduplication
The Windows Server Remote Desktop Services (RDS) role provides remote users with access to Windows desktops or applications running on a server or to a Windows client OS running on a virtual machine (VM). To reduce the total amount of storage needed for RDS and VDI, servers running Windows Server 2012 R2 with data deduplication enabled (white box) can be used for storing the files for RDS sessions or running VMs, thereby storing a single copy of data that is needed by multiple files.
The remaining RDS components, which remain largely unchanged in Windows Server 2012 R2, include the following (gray boxes):
Remote Desktop Web Access (top left) provides users connecting to RDS via an internal corporate network with a menu of remote desktop sessions, remote applications, or VMs that the users are authorized to use.
Remote Desktop Gateway (bottom left) provides users connecting from the Internet with a menu of options similar to the Remote Desktop Web Access component. Often, a reverse proxy server will be used to facilitate a secure connection between the remote Internet user and the Remote Desktop Gateway.
