Microsoft’s revenues can be divided into six different categories (although the company combines Desktop Applications, Desktop Platforms, and Enterprise Software and Services into one category, it still reports figures from each of these divisions separately):

Desktop Applications includes a variety of consumer and business applications, such as Office; Project; Visio; Great Plains; bCentral; and Client Access Licenses (CALs) for certain of the .NET Enterprise Servers, including Windows 2000 and Exchange.

Desktop Platforms includes the company’s desktop operating systems, such as Windows XP, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows NT Workstation, and Windows ME.

Enterprise Software and Services includes all Windows servers; server applications, including the .NET Enterprise Servers; developer tools and services; and various enterprise services, including consulting, support, and training services.

Consumer Software, Services, and Devices includes MSN Internet Access; the MSN family of Web sites and services; games and gaming consoles; learning and productivity software; mobile and wireless devices; TV-related services; and embedded systems.
