A System Center Reporting Manager (SCRM) 2006 server collects operational management data from SQL Server 2000 or 2005 databases on Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 and Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 servers and aggregates it in a SQL Server 2005 data warehouse. It then uses SQL Server Reporting Services to create an ASP.NET Web site that allows users to generate Web reports from the consolidated data using either the supplied or customized report definitions. However, the data collection method differs between MOM and SMS.
MOM 2005 has an optional built-in reporting system that, architecturally speaking, is almost identical to the reporting system used by SCRM 2006. Both use SQL Server data transformation services (DTS) to populate their SQL Server Analysis Services data warehouse with a subset of MOM operational data collected from the monitored servers. SCRM’s DTS service calls SQL Server on the MOM server to request new or changed data from the MOM operational database and copies it into the SCRM data warehouse in the same manner as does MOM’s reporting system. However, unlike the MOM reporting system, SCRM can consolidate data from multiple MOM servers and create reports that combine MOM data with SMS data.
