Search Features in SharePoint Editions

Search features vary among the editions of SharePoint Server 2007.

SharePoint Server 2007 for Search comes in two editions, Standard and Enterprise, neither of which requires Client Access Licenses (CALs). Organizations may allow anonymous external users to access SharePoint Server 2007 for Search over the Internet-for example, to enable search on a corporate Web site-at no extra charge.

The full version of SharePoint Server 2007 can be accessed using a Standard CAL alone or a Standard CAL plus an Enterprise CAL. (Customers must buy Enterprise CALs in addition to, not in place of, Standard CALs.)

All prices are for the Open License volume license program in the United States; prices are lower for Select and Enterprise Agreements.

(For more details on licensing, see “Appendix: Requirements, Licensing, and Pricing“.)

Another type of license (not shown here), SharePoint Server 2007 for Internet Sites, gives external, anonymous users Internet access to the full version of SharePoint Server 2007. This license, which costs about US$41,000 in the Open License program, is restrictive: All data on a server covered by the license must be publicly accessible and cannot be limited to internal users. Therefore, Microsoft suggests that organizations buy this license only if they are interested in the Web content management features of SharePoint Server 2007.
