Hyper-V, Microsoft’s virtualization technology, is leveraged across Microsoft’s OS offerings. This chart summarizes the support status of Microsoft’s server OS products that support the Hyper-V hypervisor for hosting Hyper-V VMs.

Hyper-V Server

Hyper-V Server 2019, the last version of the free Hyper-V Server OS, was released in Nov. 2018. No further versions of Hyper-V Server are planned, and there are no other products that provide Hyper-V virtualization at no cost. Hyper-V Server is supported on the Long Term Servicing Channel (LTSC), which provides five years of Mainstream support and five years of Extended support.

Hyper-V Server 2016 will leave Extended support in Jan. 2027, and Hyper-V Server 2019 will leave Extended support in Jan. 2029.

Windows Server LTSC

Windows Server 2025, the latest LTSC version of Windows Server, was released in Nov. 2024. LTSC versions of Windows Server provide five years of Mainstream support and five years of Extended support. Hyper-V virtualization is available with Windows Server as a deployable feature (also called a server role).
