Charts & IllustrationsSharePoint and Project Server Overview
The latest version of SharePoint Server, SharePoint Server 2016, was released in May 2016. Office 365 now occupies most of Microsoft’s development in collaboration, business intelligence, and other focus areas of SharePoint. SharePoint Server 2016 received improvements for scalability, availability, security, and management and for hybrid systems that combine on-premises SharePoint installations with Office 365 services. The first SharePoint Server feature pack, which includes improved administration features, became generally available in Nov. 2016; feature packs do not affect product life cycle. SharePoint Server 2016 will be a likely target for companies migrating from SharePoint 2007, which leaves Extended support Oct. 10, 2017, and SharePoint Server 2010, which left Mainstream support in Oct. 2015. Future improvements to SharePoint Server will be delivered as feature packs, starting in 2017; plans for complete successor versions have not been announced.
Project Server requires SharePoint Server, and Project Server 2016, the next version, is integrated into the installer for SharePoint Server 2016.
