SQL Server 2012 arrived in Apr. 2012 and received Service Pack 1 (SP1) in Nov. 2012. Future SQL Server software versions will probably alternate between minor releases (like 2008 R2) and major ones (like 2012), with a gap of 18 months to three years between releases. SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 became available in July 2012. SQL Server 2012 SP1 delivers business intelligence (BI) enhancements and compatibility with SharePoint 2013.

The Parallel Data Warehouse appliance platform incorporates technology acquired with Datallegro. It enables organizations to build large data warehouses on an integrated package, including commodity hardware and preinstalled, configured, and tuned software; products based on the platform began to appear from Microsoft’s hardware partners before the end of 2010. During the first half of 2013, the platform will be updated to SQL Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 and is anticipated to deliver a lower operating cost than the current version, while adding new features ahead of the released version of SQL Server.
