Charts & IllustrationsThree Classes of Online Services
The following chart divides Microsoft’s current and planned online services into three classes: services that augment existing Microsoft products (additive), services that have no obvious relationship to Microsoft software (stand-alone), and services that could conceivably replace Microsoft software (replacement). It describes each service, lists associated Microsoft software where appropriate, and explains how Microsoft makes money from the service (e.g., charging subscriptions, selling advertisements).
Service | Description | Business Model | Product Required (Or Replaced) |
Additive Services | |||
Exchange Hosted Services | Spam filtering, virus scanning, backup | Subscription | Exchange Server 2007 (required for some services) |
Forefront Client Security (planned) | Combination software-service for enterprise PC antivirus and antispyware | Subscription | Windows PC |
Groove Enterprise Services | Hosted management tools for small installations |
