Charts & IllustrationsVideo Copy-Protection Systems
New components in Windows Vista (formerly code-named Longhorn) will be able to enforce restrictions set by various video copy-protection systems. Shown here are some of the major copy-protection systems proposed or in use for video today. In theory, the new components in Windows Vista will be able to enforce restrictions imposed by any of these technologies. However, Microsoft will not support technologies that fail its tests for robustness, and some party (content owners, distributors, or Microsoft) will have to write the Input Trust Authority (ITA) modules that translate restrictions into a form that the Windows Vista video-protection system understands. As of Aug. 2005, Microsoft has not announced specifically which (if any) of these technologies will be supported in Windows Vista.
