Charts & IllustrationsWindows Embedded Roadmap
This illustration summarizes the current and planned Windows Embedded Business embedded OSs and device platforms. White boxes describe currently available versions. Gray boxes describe anticipated versions and sometimes list upcoming events by calendar quarter, either “GA” (general availability), “CTP” (Community Technical Preview release), or “Info” (release of information about the version’s capabilities and schedule by Microsoft). Names in italics are unofficial. Solid arrows connect a version to its replacement; if the line is dotted, an architectural change is occurring between two versions which may affect how components and applications are developed and, therefore, application compatibility between the versions.
The embedded OSs, which can be used to build highly customized devices are shown at the top of the chart.
Windows Embedded Standard is based on the Windows client OS. Windows Embedded 8 Standard is derived from Windows 8 Pro. Windows Embedded Compact, which supports multiple processors, and real-time response to interrupts, is based on the Windows Embedded Compact kernel, formerly Windows CE.
