Windows Embedded device platforms will probably receive updates in the second half of 2016. Most products other than Windows for mobile devices follow Microsoft’s standard life-cycle support policies for business and development products, in which a version qualifies for 10 years of support, divided into a Mainstream phase and an Extended phase. (Microsoft generally continues to offer licenses for these products for up to five years after the end of Extended support, enabling manufacturers to continue to ship devices for 15 years.)

Device platforms other than the Automotive family have received recent updates and are likely to get new updates based alongside Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016. Future releases are less clear for the embedded OSs.

Companies looking to build solutions based on embedded versions of Windows should note the gaps and peculiarities in the support life cycles for the following OS versions, as of Feb. 2016:

  • Windows 10 IoT Core, 10 IoT Core Pro, and 10 IoT
