Charts & IllustrationsWindows Embedded Update Roadmap
The Windows Embedded OSs and platforms will get new names as they are updated over the next two years.
Windows CE will become Windows Embedded Compact and will probably get a new release in 2009 or early 2010. Windows Embedded NavReady 2009, a new embedded platform, based on Windows CE and designed specifically for personal navigation devices, was released in June 2008. Windows Mobile 7.0, the next version of Microsoft’s specialized platform for smart phones, which is likely to emerge in 2009, will probably be based on the most recent version of the Windows CE embedded OS (Windows CE 6.0 R2). Not shown is Auto 3.0, a platform based on Windows Embedded Compact (CE 6.0), which is used by car manufacturers such as Ford (in its Sync system).
Windows XP Embedded (XPe) will become Windows Embedded Standard 2009 and is currently available as a customer technology preview, with release due before the end of 2008. The Windows embedded platform for retail devices, Windows Embedded POS Ready, will be updated with the same updates in Windows Embedded Standard in 2008 or 2009.
