No CAL required | Anonymous access to a Windows server when user identification is impossible or not needed, such as anonymous access to a Windows-powered Web server or to a firewall/caching server. |
CAL in per-server mode (concurrent) | One log-on session to a Windows server, most popular in organizations with a single Windows server shared by multiple staff. |
CAL in per-seat mode, assigned to a device
(Note: The mode name will be changed to “per device or per user”) |
Access by one device to all Windows servers in an organization, popular in larger organizations in which users access multiple Windows servers. |
