In BriefSharePoint Maps Web Part to Move to Azure Maps
The SharePoint Maps web part will begin using Azure Maps in Mar. 2026. Organizations currently using the SharePoint Maps web part (which is based on Bing Maps) have to update allowlists and network security systems to use atlas.microsoft.com to avoid disruptions. Azure Maps improves reliability and aligns SharePoint with Microsoft’s strategy for mapping technology, per Microsoft.
The move to Azure Maps will occur automatically, starting in Mar. 2026 and finishing by Apr. 2026. There is no opt out. SharePoint site owners and site admins using this web part should test it after the move to Azure Maps. They should notify help desk personnel about this change and the loss of functionality.
Functionality that will be retired or no longer supported includes:
- Business Entity Search: No replacement noted.
- Bird’s Eye and Street View: SharePoint Maps instead fails back to Road View.
- Autosuggestions for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean: No replacement noted.
More information on the changeover to Azure Maps is available in the Message Center notice “MC1222981: SharePoint: Migrate the Maps web part to Azure Maps” (Admin access required).
