Changes to Project Online subscriptions alter packaging of hosted features and Windows-based client applications that affect customers differently. Many customers will see reduced costs; however, costs may rise substantially for customers who require advanced planning and resource management features to manage complex projects and portfolios. The new plans encourage customers to adopt the hosted service by offering plans that only include the desktop client and hosted services. Customers in multiyear agreements can decide when to migrate users, and they can add users to old or new plans through the end of their term.

New Plans Raise Cost for Some Customers

The strategy Microsoft adopted in this change is to encourage Project customers to migrate to subscription licensing and adopt the online service for hosting projects.

Old Rule

The old rule included four User SL (Subscription License) plans (all prices are per user per month):

Project Online (US$33) was the main plan that provided rights to store and access projects in the hosted service. Users in this plan accessed projects via Web and mobile applications or through a separately purchased Project Professional desktop client.
