Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement Server is Microsoft’s on-premises customer relationship management (CRM) product for management of sales and customer service activities. Previously called Dynamics CRM, the product was renamed Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement in June 2017, although the product name of Dynamics 365 Server persists.

Product: Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement Server

Near and Long Term (2025 and Beyond)

The current version, 9, was expected to get many of the new features released to the cloud offering, although at a slower pace. However, several events—delays to release dates, plans for new versions being replaced with a service pack, and removal of features in Service Pack 1—have led Directions to conclude that Dynamics 365 Server is in a maintenance mode until it retires in Jan. 2029, and customers should not expect a new on-premises version.

It is unlikely that Microsoft will release a major version that significantly improves the product. Even if a major version appears, it will probably use a Modern Lifecycle, which gives Microsoft the ability to retire the product with 24-months’ notice.
