Dataverse is a cloud database service designed to make creating and using data in business applications easier than with conventional database technologies. It’s the primary data storage mechanism for the Power Platform, including Power Apps, Power Automate, Power Pages, and Copilot Studio, and for Dynamics 365 CRM and ERP applications, supplying the tables, relationships, business logic, and security model those applications share. The service is designed to let information workers and makers create and use business-specific data without needing advanced database design and manipulation skills.

Near-Term Updates and Roadmap (2026–2027)

Microsoft is expanding Dataverse from the Power Platform’s database into the data and identity layer for its Copilot Studio agent platform. An MCP server, natural-language business skills, agent identities, a Python SDK, and Dataverse data surfaced inside Microsoft 365 Copilot all arrived within a year, each aimed at letting agents built anywhere reach business data under Dataverse permissions.
