Update: Teams Rooms Changes Device Licensing – Teams Rooms Pro and Basic, announced in Sept. 2022, replace the Teams Rooms Premium and Standard described in this report.

  • Microsoft Teams Rooms is a Device Subscription License for shared meeting room devices like Surface Hub and Teams collaboration bars.
  • A Premium version adds additional security capabilities and the Microsoft Teams Rooms managed service for monitoring, updates, and support.
  • Organizations that licensed devices with User Subscription Licenses like Microsoft 365 E3 will need to adopt Teams Rooms to be compliant with future changes.

Microsoft Teams Rooms (MTR) licenses shared common area communication devices for use with Teams meetings and telephony. Such devices typically run a version of Windows 10 IoT or Android instead of an end-user edition of the Windows client OS and are not intended to be used in conjunction with user-based licensing. A premium tier of MTR adds security capabilities and a Microsoft-managed support and monitoring service, but will likely be of interest only to organizations with a large estate of devices to manage.
