  • Live events offer better support for large, distributed audiences than Teams meetings or webinars but with less interactivity.
  • Live events created in Teams now support external encoders, enabling use of professional video production software.
  • Live events in Stream and Yammer will be retired in Jan. 2024.

Live events, which are included with most Microsoft 365 Enterprise plans, enable streaming video broadcasts to large audiences. Teams and Yammer have supported creation of basic live events, and customers could leverage professional video production tools (external encoders) with live events created in Stream, Microsoft’s hosted video service. Live events functionality is moving to Teams, including support for external encoders, and live events in Stream (Classic) and Yammer will both be retired on Jan. 31, 2024. Live event core capabilities will remain the same, with no change for live event attendees.

(This report was updated Aug. 28, 2023 to reflect changed retirement dates from Microsoft.)
