  • OneLake, the data management component in Microsoft Fabric, is key to Microsoft’s new analytic and data lake strategy.
  • Why is OneLake so important? Many Microsoft cloud analytic services are being absorbed by Fabric, and customers using those services will eventually use OneLake.
  • OneLake is based on mature data management technologies and has new data-sharing capabilities, so organizations may find it provides the central data analytic storage they need.

OneLake is the core data management component introduced as a part of Microsoft Fabric and is the primary focus of Microsoft’s investment in analytic data management. OneLake can host and query most data formats that are used for analytics and reporting, and it can connect to and share data with a variety of external data solutions. It is also based on open source technologies, providing an attractive option for organizations that want to centralize analytic data on Azure but prefer to avoid the expense of Microsoft proprietary technology like SQL Server data warehouse.
