IIS Media Services is a set of downloadable extensions that turn IIS into an integrated HTTP-based digital media delivery platform. Media Services 3.0, which was released in Sept. 2009, can deliver streams in a variety of formats, including full High Definition (1080p), H.264, and Advanced Audio Coding.

IIS Media Services 3.0 replaces the Media Services components that were included with some previous versions of Windows Server but were stripped out in Windows Server 2008.

IIS Media Services 3.0 includes the following features:

Smooth Streaming provides for adaptive streaming of media over HTTP by delivering small fragments of content (typically two seconds’ worth of video) and then verifying that each has arrived within the appropriate time and has played back at the expected quality level. If one fragment does not meet these requirements, the next fragment can be delivered at a somewhat lower quality level. Conversely, when conditions allow it, the quality of subsequent fragments will be at a higher quality level.
