Using a three-layer architecture, Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) collects data from monitored computers and presents it to operators.

Presentation layer (left). The operator’s console enables operators to view system health and acknowledge alerts. The administrator’s console provides the means to configure MOM parameters and rules. The Web console gives other stakeholders (such as managers and application developers) a way to view current heath status. It also gives operators a quick way to check on the system when away from an operator’s console. MOM also includes reporting software that provides HTML-based reports from stored monitoring data and sends them to users via the Web or e-mail.

Business logic layer (center). Consoles access stored monitoring data through MOM management servers, which send management packs (rules and scripts) to agents, filter and aggregate monitoring data from them, and store and query management data from the SQL Server monitoring database. The MOM management server also runs SQL Server Reporting Services, which builds reports from the MOM data warehouse.
