All Communications Server (CS) 2007 deployments will require both client and server Communications Server 2007 licenses and many will require SQL Server licenses as well.

Pictured is a simplified enterprise deployment of Communications Server 2007 supporting IM, voice and video calling between Communicator users, and on-premise Web conferencing, but not voice communications through the company’s PBX. Each user, shown at the bottom, will require both a Communications Server 2007 Standard Client Access License (SCAL) and an Enterprise Client Access License (ECAL) for the rights to access these features. Each user will also require a Communicator 2007 license (Communicator) for the right to use this Communications Server 2007 client-side companion software on his PC.

Each of the three Front-End server machines, shown in the center, requires a Communications Server 2007 Enterprise Edition (CS EE) license because they are linked together as part of a cluster for high availability. The Edge Server (middle left), which provides access for external users, requires only a Communications Server 2007 Standard Edition (CS SE) license. The Archiving Server (top left) does not require a Communications Server 2007 server license of any kind-Microsoft makes an exception for Communications Server 2007 servers dedicated to this specific purpose.
