Charts & IllustrationsClient License Prices for Windows Server
This chart lists the licenses that provide clients the right to access Windows Server 2008 R2, along with the highest price a business customer would pay through a volume purchasing program (the Open Business program). Client Access Licenses (CALs) are used to license internal users (e.g., employees and onsite contractors) while External Connectors are used to license access by external users, such as customers and partners.
Windows Server 2008 R2 does not require new CALs or External Connectors; client licenses valid for Windows Server 2008 are also valid for Windows Server 2008 R2. Similarly, CALs and External Connectors for Windows Server 2008 Active Directory Rights Management Services and Terminal Services (TS) are valid for access to the corresponding services of Windows Server 2008 R2. In Windows Server 2008 R2, TS is called Remote Desktop Services (RDS); RDS client license prices will increase 5% on Jan. 1, 2010.
A Software Assurance subscription, which provides the right to upgrade to any versions released during the term of coverage and other benefits, is available at an annual cost of 25% of the original license purchase price.
