RemoteFX technology could remove an important barrier to deployment of centrally managed desktops. Included in the first service pack for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, RemoteFX renders graphics on a server and efficiently sends the rendered images to remote computers or terminals for display. This creates a better user experience for users running graphic-intensive applications such as those that use DirectX 3D in a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). Although many organizations see VDI as a way to reduce the cost of supporting desktop applications, deploying RemoteFX requires purchasing new high-end and potentially expensive servers.

Remote Desktop Limits Graphical Applications

The goal of RemoteFX is to make a graphical application executing on a remote, centrally managed desktop render its graphic images as fast as it does on a local computer. RemoteFX will allow central management even of applications that output high-resolution, high-fidelity, or 3D graphic images, previously reserved for running on local machines to ensure adequate graphical performance.
