Analyst ReportNew MSN Client Preview Released
Microsoft has released a preview version of new MSN client software designed to make Web access more straightforward for novice users, regardless of the Internet access provider (IAP) they use. The new client software, designed to compete directly with America Online (AOL), simplifies the standard Internet Explorer (IE) 5.x interface and lets users maintain their individual profile when they share a PC or move from machine to machine. Because it binds users to the MSN portal as their starting page, the new client will bump up traffic to MSN and its advertisers, providing Microsoft with additional revenue from customers even if they access the Internet through IAPs other than Microsofts own MSN Access service.
The MSN client is a relatively small (2.5MB) “template” that installs automatically from the MSN Web site and sits on top of IE 5. Developed under the code name “Mars,” the MSN client comes bundled with Windows Media Player and MSN Messenger and runs on Windows 9x, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000 systems that have IE 5.0 or later installed.
