Windows Live Updates Announced

Winter 2008 updates to Windows Live will focus on social networking, with new services for tracking the online activities of contacts and integration with some third-party social-networking services. They also include a new photo-sharing service and a corresponding update to the Windows Live client software to connect with these new services. However, the overall Windows Live strategy remains plagued with duplicate services and brand confusion.

Wave 3 Is Coming

When Windows Live first emerged in late 2005, it was little more than a rebranding effort for former MSN services such as Hotmail, Messenger, and Spaces.

Wave 2, introduced in fall 2007, added a set of Windows desktop clients, such as Mail and Photo Gallery, that connect to these Windows Live services as well as to Internet services from third parties. With Wave 2, a two-part business strategy emerged, as follows:

  • Increase user loyalty and “stickiness” by continually improving the Microsoft online services that users find essential,
