Lync Server 2013 delivers improvements to limit system downtime and capture traffic for compliance with data retention policies. Lync Server is the central component in Microsoft’s Lync unified communications technology, which enables presence, instant messaging (IM), Web conferencing, and other forms of communication. The improvements will particularly pay off for organizations where Lync reliability is critical, and for Lync service providers, including Microsoft. However, Lync still can pose integration challenges, and changes in Lync Server 2013 could require administrator retraining and complicate migration from past versions and to future versions.

Pools Paired for Disaster Recovery

Lync Server 2013 introduces a new way to recover quickly from the loss of a Front End pool due to a natural disaster, a network outage, or other major event. The Front End pool is the most important component in Lync systems, delivering most of the services visible to end users. (See the illustration “Lync 2013 Server Types“.)
