Configuration Manager version 1702 is the latest Current Branch release and became available in Mar. 2017. Shown here are released and expected versions of Configuration Manager with retirement dates for support of particular releases. Released earlier than the rest of System Center 2016 (in order to support managing Windows 10), Configuration Manager now has two support branches: the Current Branch (which gets updated at approximately three- to four-month intervals) and the Long-Term Servicing Branch ([LTSB] which gets updated with System Center). There are monthly technical previews, and then one of the previews is promoted to the Current Branch.
Configuration Manager versions are derived from the year and month of the software build. For example, the first release under the naming scheme was version 1511 because the final build occurred in Nov. 2015; it was released in Dec. 2015. The latest Current Branch version is 1702, released in Mar. 2017.
Customers on the latest Current Branch version receive both security and critical updates until a new Current Branch version is released, after which they receive only security updates for the remainder of the 12-month support life cycle. Technical support for a Configuration Manager Current Branch version is provided for only 12 months, so customers must upgrade to a later Current Branch version to remain supported after that time. For example, version 1511 is no longer eligible for support after Dec. 8, 2016. Customers remaining on older versions might be at risk because they will not receive technical support, and not even security updates will be provided. Customers should upgrade to the latest Current Branch version to ensure they receive fixes and security updates.
