  • Microsoft uses acquisitions to boost its product offerings or fill gaps in its product lines.

Acquisitions can signal that Microsoft is buying technology where it sees a market it needs to enter quickly. It can also indicate internal product development is falling behind competitors, a need to improve its talent pool or patent portfolio, or a move to discourage other companies from entering a market.

Microsoft built upon its 2018 acquisition of GitHub in 2019 with several acquisitions to enhance that service’s capabilities for developers. Several other acquisitions could make it easier for organizations to migrate to and use Azure services and complement offerings in areas where Microsoft sees potential growth, notably development and data services.
