  • Intune Plan 2 is required to use Intune to manage most advanced shared devices like AR/VR headsets, smart displays, and select other meeting room devices.
  • Teams’ licenses for shared devices include Intune Plan 2, but customers not using Teams will need to license all users with a separately purchased Plan 2 license.
  • All three scenarios appear to favor Microsoft hardware and services, and customers using third-party devices and services will face additional costs.

Customers wanting to use Intune with certain shared devices will require Intune Plan 2 for a right that Microsoft calls “Intune management of specialty devices.” Specialty devices currently include three classes of shared devices common in conference rooms or used for specific vertical applications. Plan 2 licenses must be acquired for all potential users of these devices, a cost that many customers were not expecting and did not budget for. However, the costs could be less for customers who have adopted Teams.
