The main text of the chapter “How Microsoft Licenses Its Products” explains, in general terms, which licenses customers need to acquire to use Microsoft server applications. However, there are many subtle licensing model variations, product use restrictions, and other disparities across server applications that must be considered to make well-informed license purchase decisions.
This appendix offers notes for each Microsoft server application that
- Clarify exactly which machines need to be licensed when a particular server application is deployed
- List other Microsoft products that an organization might want or need to license in conjunction with a particular server application (such as the Microsoft Operations Manager [MOM], Application Management Pack, or SQL Server 2000)
- Explain any special restrictions on how a server application may be used
- Detail the availability and licensing model for fee-based add-on technologies (such as BizTalk “accelerators”)
- Examine any other “special case
