Azure Active Directory Application Proxy, a new feature of paid subscription tiers of Azure Active Directory (AAD), allows users outside the corporate network to securely access an organization’s internal applications without requiring them to set up a virtual private network (VPN). The feature authenticates users through AAD to provide and control access to applications. The new Application Proxy implements functionality from the Web Application Proxy in Windows Server 2012 R2 and the Forefront Unified Access Gateway (UAG). Azure Application Proxy could offer easier deployment and better security than those products, especially for customers who are already using AAD.

What Is an Application Proxy?

With an application proxy, administrators publish (make available) applications based on device and user identities. The application proxy provides the connection between the directory (either Active Directory [AD] on-premises or hosted AAD) and the user for authentication.

User subscription licenses for both AAD Premium and Basic now include the AAD Application Proxy capability.
