Carmakers and suppliers will be offered a new version of Microsoft Auto, the company’s software and hardware reference platform for in-car systems that support mobile device integration, speech recognition, and entertainment. The new version improves support for audio integration and expands hardware options. In addition, Microsoft announced some partner programs that affect training and add-ins to improve the services available on the platform. However, the announcements come amidst hard economic times in the automotive sector.

Basis of Ford SYNC

Auto 4.0, announced in conjunction with the Mar. 2009 CeBIT and the embedded world conferences held in Germany, is the latest version of a platform that was introduced in 2006 under the name Windows Mobile for Automotive (WMFA). The previous version of Auto is the technology underlying Fiat’s Blue&Me, which is available in Europe, South America, and India, and Ford’s SYNC, which is available in North America and the Middle East. The Auto platform is built on Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2.
