  • Azure Active Directory Basic was quietly retired in Aug. 2019.
  • Replacement options all result in higher cost.

Beginning in Aug. 2019, customers can no longer acquire new licenses for Azure Active Directory (AAD) Basic, the lowest-end paid edition of AAD.

AAD Basic offered some AAD Premium P1 features such as self-service password reset but at a lower cost. It was particularly useful for kiosk workers and other employees or contractors using AAD to sign on to third-party applications who did not require the full suite of AAD Premium P1 capabilities.

Replacement Options

With the removal of AAD Basic, customers will need to assess how best to license employees and contractors for premium capabilities of AAD. Many AAD Premium P1 features are included in Office 365 Enterprise E3 User Subscription Licenses (User SLs), but these capabilities are then generally licensed only for use with Office 365 applications and services, not with other AAD-integrated services and applications, and not for use with on-premises servers.
