  • Azure App Configuration, a free service in preview, stores application metadata for applications hosted in Azure or elsewhere.
  • The service can help administrators manage settings across applications, especially those with dispersed components, in one place.
  • It is similar to other technologies such as Azure App Service settings and Kubernetes etcd, but it could be applicable to more applications than those offerings.

App Configuration stores key-value pairs used by applications for settings and feature enablement. The service offers APIs for several popular application platforms and management tools to help administrators view and update settings across multiple application instances. However, applications will require new code to use the service.

Managing Application Settings

Applications settings, such as database connection strings, resource consumption limits, and default values, are typically stored outside of an application’s source code, allowing the values to be managed by administrators. Managing settings has become challenging as modern applications often use multiple distributed components that may require different stores and tools to work with settings.
