Azure Data Box Disk (in-preview) is a smaller, simplified option of the Azure Data Box service. With Data Box, customers can import data into Azure with physical disks, which could be faster or more convenient than network imports for large quantities of data, especially from sites with little or no Internet connectivity. Data Box Disk is expected to be less expensive than the existing Data Box appliance and is designed for users with less technical expertise, such as staff in remote offices. Also, the smaller disk-based format could make Data Box Disk useful for off-site data collection.

Data Box Disk provides SSD-based disks that connect directly to a source device via a USB 3.1 or SATA connection. Disks are encrypted using 128-bit encryption, and customers can transfer a total of 35TB per order. By contrast, the full Data Box service appliance offers 80TB capacity and 256-bit encryption, and it operates as a network attached storage device on a customer’s network.
