  • Azure DevOps brings new user interfaces to Visual Studio Team Services that will require some retraining.
  • It can work with non-Microsoft frameworks and tools but depends on Azure.
  • A free tier of Azure DevOps services could expand the base of developers trained on the offering.

Azure DevOps is a new, rebranded set of Microsoft-hosted software development services. The services repackage and replace Visual Studio Team Services (VSTS) capabilities with new user interfaces and offer a free tier of service for open source software developers and small teams. Customers can use any subset of the services, and they work with non-Microsoft technologies such as Linux, macOS, and various development frameworks and programming languages. Existing VSTS customers will have some impact.

DevOps encompasses the ongoing cycle of software development, building, testing, deployment, monitoring, and feedback for improvement. These processes involve development teams, IT staff, and end users, although Azure DevOps mainly targets developers. Other Azure offerings, such as Application Insights, Monitor, and Log Analytics, address other parts of the Dev-Ops cycle.
