Analyst ReportAzure Stack HCI Version 20H2 Is a Dedicated HCI Offering
- Azure Stack HCI version 20H2, available in preview, is a new iteration of Stack HCI running on Microsoft-validated hardware.
- The version is a new host OS specifically intended to run hyper-converged infrastructure, billed as an Azure service.
- While Stack HCI offers integration with Azure services, this new version still does not host Azure services on-premises like Stack Hub.
Azure Stack HCI (hyper-converged infrastructure) solutions are Microsoft-validated hardware from third-party vendors similar to the Windows Software-Defined Datacenter solutions offered for Windows Server 2016. A new iteration of Stack HCI now in preview introduces a new host OS designed specifically to run HCI and integrate with Azure services but, unlike Azure Stack Hub, still does not provide Azure services on-premises. While customers can gain similar functionality with deployments of Windows Server 2019 designed to their own specifications, Stack HCI version 20H2 offers improvements that are not present in Windows Server and could simplify the design and integration of data center deployments.
